UK opposition leader Corbyn says he would ensure Brexit deal

Following the refusal by Prime Minister Theresa May to face her rivals in a televised debate, the Sky News-Channel 4 co-hosted show saw Mrs May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn responding to questions from the audience and interviewer Jeremy Paxman instead. "I don't think she should be brought into political discussion".

She said: "He is not prepared to take a single hard decision for the good of our economy".

"You have to. In negotiations, you have to recognise that you're not in there to get a deal at any price". Longstanding supporters in the Tory broadsheets thought she had given a steely performance - strong and stable, you might call it - but many others veered between boredom and ridicule as Paxman prompted laughter and a few heckles as he pulled apart her robotic responses.

The Labour leader said he did not believe it had been a "plot" but added: "Margaret Thatcher made a great deal of that issue at the time".

"We will be there to negotiate the right deal but what I have said is that no deal is better than a bad deal".

May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn appeared in what was billed as a debate although they were interviewed and answered questions from an audience separately.

Plaid Cymru criticised the lack of mentions of Wales, and the Green Party said Mrs May had "avoided the question" on her "unfair" social care reforms.

Answering questions on the interview after launching Labour's race and faith manifesto in Watford, Mr Corbyn said: "I didn't have the exact figure in front of me, so I was unable to answer that question, for which obviously I apologise".

Because I am clear about the instruction I have been given, clear about what needs to be done, and ready to get on with the job on day one - while Jeremy Corbyn doesn't have the belief, the will or the plan to deliver Brexit.

He insisted Labour wouldn't "soften" United Kingdom foreign policy in the wake of a speech in which he said overseas military interventions had make the country less safe.

When asked whether he would contemplate a scenario where Britain failed to strike an arrangement with the rest of the bloc, Corbyn said: "There's going to be a deal".

The Labour leader dismissed suggestions he was treated unfairly on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, when he paused several times when repeatedly asked to give a cost for the pledge to roll out free care to all two to four year-olds, before asking: "Can we come back to that in a moment?"

On immigration, he claimed under Labour's plan for "managed migration" it would not go up but would "probably" come down from its current level of around 250,000.

"I am not a dictator", Corbyn said in one his best lines of the night. "The amount of debt that I have, personally, it nearly put me off going to uni".

He refused to be drawn on whether he would order a drone strike against a terrorist plotting overseas to attack the United Kingdom, saying he could not answer a "hypothetical question without the evidence".
