Macron says Trump handshake was 'moment of truth'

May and Macron

He succeeded, but just barely.

Emmanuel Macron told a French newspaper on Sunday that "my handshake with him, it wasn't innocent". "It's not the alpha and the omega of politics, but a moment of truth".

"We must show that we won't make small concessions, even symbolic ones, but we also shouldn't over-hype things", the French President continued.

Cameras also caught Macron swerving to avoid greeting Trump (favoring German Chancellor Angela Merkel instead) after walking up toward North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders Thursday at the start of the summit in Brussels.

French President Emmanuel Macron has finally explained what was going on during his handshake with US President Donald Trump in Brussels.

Congratulations to both leaders for emerging from the summit with all of their hands intact.

Trump is no stranger to awkward handshakes, though. "I don't believe in the diplomacy of public invective, but in my bilateral dialogues, I don't let anything pass, that is how we are respected", he said.

Now it appears that Macron was warned about Trump's bizarrely aggressive handshake style prior to their meeting in Brussels and his firm counter grip wasn't purely coincidental.

When Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau visited Trump for the first time, he was clearly prepared.

Yet another handshake wrestle followed the snub, as Trump imposed on Macron the full force of his trademark grab-and-pull maneuvers with Macron having to hold onto Trump's arm for leverage.
