Trump wishes ex-FBI boss 'luck' for blockbuster testimony

Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats told associates in March that President Donald Trump asked him to get FBI Director Jim Comey to lay off his probe of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, The Washington Post reported.

Trump made the comment in a meeting with Republican leadership on health care and tax cuts.

Comey's highly anticipated appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday could be a turning point in a controversy that has rocked Trump's young administration.

The report is based on what is described as a "source familiar with Comey's thinking", according to the story.

Trump reportedly began complaining about the FBI investigation, which Comey had confirmed was happening two days earlier in a Congressional hearing, as well as Comey's handling of it.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is now the most public of the inquiries into the alleged Moscow meddling, with the House Intelligence Committee, FBI and Special Counsel Robert Mueller also looking into it.

The Justice Department announced the Georgia woman's arrest Monday as The Intercept reported that it had obtained a classified report suggesting Russian hackers attacked a US voting software supplier days before last year's presidential election.

The person, who was not authorized to discuss the matter by name and spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press the comment was made because of concerns Comey had about Trump.

"You're going to have senators who probably challenge Comey to some extent because they don't like what he's done in the past", Hosko said.

A spokesman for Pompeo declined to comment on the closed-door discussions.

White House officials appear eager to keep the president away from television and Twitter Thursday, though those efforts rarely succeed. "In fact when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, 'You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won, '" Trump said.

He said the White House has "improved" its communications with surrogates, starting with the president's recent trip overseas, and frequently holds call-ins to discuss what story lines they'd like to push.

Here is yet another accusation that the president attempted to obstruct a federal investigation looking into his campaign's ties to Russian Federation.
