Apple Bug Lets iPhone Users Listen in on Others Via FaceTime

Rosanna Arquette Claims Harvey Weinstein Spies

US Today reported that the bug was circulated on the internet Monday night and all people with intentions to eavesdrop on you need to do is to start a FaceTime call.

The bug allows an iPhone user placing a call using Apple's FaceTime video-calling feature to hear audio from the recipient's phone even if the recipient has not yet picked up the call, according to Reuters. Next, before they answer, swipe up and add yourself to the call. Last night, the company said it temporarily disabled all group FaceTime functionality. You can do this on an iPhone by going into the Settings application and toggling the FaceTime app switch to gray. In the meantime, Apple's website indicates Group FaceTime is unavailable, and the company confirmed it has started disabling the Group FaceTime feature for all users. Both iPhones must be running iOS 12.1 or later, or macOS 10.14 Mojave.

It's possible Apple may have been able to eliminate this issue before the vast majority of fans even noticed it, however.

The technique involves using the software's group chat function, apparently confusing the software into activating the target's microphone, even if the call has not been accepted. The publication listed a detailed succession of steps needed to reproduce the glitch, which involved starting a FaceTime video call with an iPhone contact and then immediately adding your own phone number to the call.

While it is not known who first discovered this bug, numerous people have been posting about it on social media and making video demonstrations as shown below.

Jack Dorsey, the chief executive officer of Twitter Inc., recommended that users disable FaceTime until a fix is issued.

You can always enable FaceTime again once Apple has rolled out an update with the necessary fix.

To turn it off on a Mac, open the FaceTime app and go to FaceTime on top of the screen, then select "Turn FaceTime Off".

My family and I are running Apple iOS 12.1.3 on our iPhone XS and iPhone 7 devices.
