Elizabeth Warren takes big move toward 2020 presidential run

David Axelrod

The Massachusetts Democrat, known for her critiques of big banks and corporations, became the first major candidate to declare her intentions with a video posted online on New Year's Eve.

CNN then showed a poll they had conducted were she ranked seven out of ten among other Democrats who could potentially run for president in 2020.

Warren has been a leading voice on the left and for years has launched withering attacks on the United States banking system, which made her a poster child of the progressive movement - but some aren't buying the narrative that Warren is a progressive hero, particularly since she failed to endorse Bernie Sanders during the 2016 primaries.

"America's middle class is under attack", she says on the video.

The New York Times reports that Warren sent out an email to her supporters at 8:30 a.m.in which she announced she was forming an exploratory committee. "You know it. I know it. Meanwhile, a September poll indicated that MA voters were more enthusiastic about Patrick making a White House bid than Warren".

Early on in the 2016 Democratic primaries, a group of progressives set up a campaign called "Run Warren Run", to encourage Warren to jump into the race. But by definition, a politician who has formed an exploratory committee is not yet a candidate for president.

Warren won her Senate seat in 2012, defeating incumbent Sen. She'll be 70 in February 2020 at the start of nominating contests, which will feature scores of millennial and non-white voters who want candidates that are culturally relevant to them.

Warren entered politics after the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, and before that, she was a professor with an expertise in bankruptcy and commercial law.

Senator Warren has denounced Mr Trump as an "insecure money grubber" with a platform of "racism, sexism and xenophobia" while Mr Trump has described the former Harvard Law School professor as "goofy" and a "low life" with "a nasty mouth". "That's a fundamental promise of America", Warren says.

Warren tweeted later Monday morning that she expects to formally announce her decision to run "early in the new year". She quickly became one of the party's more prominent liberals even as she sometimes fought with Obama administration officials over their response to the market turmoil. Phony! ... Now that her claims of being of Indian heritage have turned out to be a scam and a lie, Elizabeth Warren should apologize for perpetrating this fraud against the American Public.

Warren considered running for president in 2016 but ultimately decided against it.

On Monday, Senator Warren released a video in which she outlined her vision of a path to opportunity for all Americans, not just the wealthy.

The Cherokee Nation responded to the results at the time by arguing that "a DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship".
