House Democrats pass bill to end shutdown, reopen government

Trump digs in on Day 12 of shutdown, calling a border wall timeless, not antiquated -- like the wheel

President Donald Trump warned that the partial shutdown of the USA government, which entered its 12th day on Wednesday, could last a "long time" as he stood firm in his demand for billions of dollars in funding for a border wall with Mexico.

"The impasse is real and it is deep", Meadows said in an interview.

But such cooperation across the political aisle appeared unlikely as Trump continued to dig in over his demand that Congress approve a $5 billion plan to construct a border wall aimed at thwarting illegal immigration - with Democrats unlikely to appease him.

The full-year funding bill for eight departments passed on a 239-192 vote, with five Republicans joining all Democrats in favor. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is already saying he won't take up the House funding proposal to open the government without border wall funding - even though it will be identical to the bill he himself shepherded through the Senate on voice vote two week ago.

"We can go through the back and forth", Pelosi said in a clip that aired on MSNBC on Wednesday. "No". "The bill would also undermine the President's Mexico City Policy (Presidential Memorandum of January 23, 2017), which prohibits the funding of foreign nongovernmental organizations that promote or perform abortions".

On Thursday, the tough-as-nails Democrat once again became America's most powerful elected woman in a comeback for the political history books. She was forced to navigate simmering party unease that saw dozens of House Democrats and candidates signalling a desire for change at the top. It also would fund dozens of related agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration.

The White House said he made calls Thursday to the family of Cpl.

Trump said his meeting with the union officials had always been planned and just happened to come at "a very opportune time".

Congressional leaders from both parties held unproductive talks with Mr. Trump at the White House on Thursday and are to return for another round on Friday, a sign the shutdown is likely to continue for the rest of the week. He then left without taking questions from reporters.

Democrats' new majority in the House of Representatives marked a dramatic power shift on Capitol Hill less than two years before the Republican president's re-election bid, as Democrats intend to put a check on Trump's turbulent White House.

Trump on Wednesday told the leaders he would "look foolish" for conceding without money for the wall along the U.S. -Mexico border. "We can pass legislation that has the appropriations number in it while we continue to get more but we should continue to do our jobs and get the government open".

House progressives urged Pelosi not to provide any money for the wall.

Federal workers are bearing the brunt of the shutdown's effects.

Numerous federal workers impacted will miss their first paycheck beginning next week.

Another 380,000 employees have been furloughed without pay.

Visitors to Smithsonian museums, among Washington's most popular tourist attractions, were being turned away during the shutdown, as were visitors to numerous nation's federal parks. Financial markets are flying blind as the Commerce and Agriculture departments suspended regular reports. Incoming White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, a former congressman, sat with Republican leaders. The bill, which would provide money through the end of the fiscal year September 30, was approved, 241-190, with several House Republicans joining Democrats.

"Apparently, Democrats in their first day as the House majority intend on pushing divisive, pro-abortion policies that would allow taxpayer dollars to flow to worldwide organizations that promote and perform abortions", he said in a statement. Only Democrat Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii joined them in voting against the rules.
