Roger Federer beats Serena Williams in Hopman Cup exhibition match

Roger Federer enjoys impressive start to new season

For the first time in their decades-long tennis careers, Serena Williams and Roger Federer will play each other on New Year's Day.

Federer eventually clinched it for reigning champion by claiming the winning point in the truncated tiebreak used in mixed doubles with a ideal angled volley.

"Just playing someone so great, and someone you admire so much, and a match that actually means something - it's not often that happens".

Both Federer and Williams say they're excited about the historic matchup.

"I'm looking forward to a great time".

"Thank you for making it possible", 20-times Grand Slam victor Federer, who is gearing up to defend his Australian Open title this month, said.

Williams grabbed at her right shoulder several times during the match, but said it wasn't anything to worry about. Magazine's June/July issue this year, Federer praised Williams.

"I'm sorry it had to finish, I was just warming up".

The 20-time Grand Slam singles champion broke immediately in the second set and looked sharp as he cruised to an easy first-up victory in the tournament. People talk about her serve so much and I see why it is such a wonderful serve.

As a result of the win, Switzerland progress through to the final on Saturday, while the U.S. will next take on Great Britain.

The Swiss pair won the mixed doubles clash with a packed stadium in Perth enjoying every moment of Federer and Serena going head-to-head for the first time.

The original "Battle of the Sexes" saw Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in an exhibition singles match in 1973.

Federer moved the British player around by crisply hitting the lines as he won five games in a row to take control of the set.

"It's definitely a relief. I knew I could play better".

"It was great fun, she is a great champion, you see how focussed and determined she is and I love that about her".

Roger Federer started preparation for his Australian Open title defense in style with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cameron Norrie at the Hopman Cup on Sunday.

The gorgeous tennis star kept her dark curled tresses pulled back into a sleek ponytail, finishing her ensemble with black heels. "Maybe one of the toughest first round matches I have played", she said.
