US warns against travelling in China

U.S. State Department Issues Travel Advisory for China Due to ‘Exit Bans’ AFP Getty 3 Jan 2019

The US State Department issued a warning on Thursday that officials in China "have asserted broad authority" to prevent US citizens from leaving the country and to beware of "arbitrary enforcement of local laws".

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay said high-level officials, potentially including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, should engage with China over the escalating dispute that has involved the detention of at least two Canadians. Reacting to the news, the US State Department has issued its own warning. China has accused the Liu family of being "involved in economic crimes".

"U.S. citizens may be detained without access to USA consular services or information about their alleged crime", according to the warning.

Considering the mounting number of detentions of Canadians in China, the USA travel advisory was crucial for the security of American citizens.

The plight of two Canadians detained in China following the arrest of a Chinese tech mogul in Vancouver is "not on [the] agenda" for an upcoming parliamentary mission to Shanghai, says the senator heading the delegation - but "it may well come up".

Strains with China expanded after Canadian police captured Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's CFO, Meng Wanzhou, on December 1 in Vancouver in line with the United States. Joseph Day said this morning as he was about to board the flight to China. China went on to detain Kovrig and Spavor in an apparent retaliation. The source says the number of detainees has remained relatively the same over the past few years.

"I think we have to take a bit of an appetizer suppressant on that front", he said.

December 11: In the morning, Kelly Craft, the US ambassador to Canada, tells reporters it is "absolutely false" to assume a political motive behind the Meng's arrest.

The travel alert anxious Canadians too. "I think we need more information transparency".

"Increasing costs and a slowdown in the Chinese economy were already pushing some companies in this direction - now there is a very strong political push added to this calculation", Hunt said. Diplomatic tensions between Canada and China have escalated since Ms Meng's arrest on Dec 1. They are among the 200 Canadians detained in China for a variety of alleged infractions and who still face legal proceedings, said a Canadian government official speaking on background.

"It's not advancing any objective other than the goal of further raising doubts about China's reliability as a country that's going to follow the rule of law". "Mutual understanding and mutual benefit comes after we get to know one another", he said.

He said he would not be leaving in the near future as he has siblings in China, and his job demanded his presence for now.

"US citizens under exit bans have been harassed and threatened", it said.

Cooper said that despite planning to discuss the Canadians' detention, the objective of the trip is to engage directly with Chinese government officials to discuss a broad range of issues, such as trade.

The advisory noted that United States citizens under exit bans "have been harassed and threatened", and that most don't find out about the exit bans until they attempt to leave the country. They have only been granted limited access to Canadian consular services.
