Shortly before polls opened, a series of blasts rocked the northeastern city of Maiduguri, which has been repeatedly hit by Boko Haram Islamists.

Security sources said militants had struck at parts of Maiduguri and a Reuters witness said he had heard gunshots and Nigerian air force jets were flying overhead.

In an emergency meeting on Monday, President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari was widely criticised for saying that anyone who interfered in elections "will do it at the expense of his own life".

A smiling Abubakar, after voting in his hometown of Yola in the northeast, told reporters that "I look forward to a successful transition".

A voter, who pleaded anonymity wondered why every materials for voting was available accept the result sheet adding that it was not acceptable.

Many Nigerians had been outraged when the vote was postponed just hours before the election last weekend.

While the elections were peaceful in many parts of the country, there were cases of violence in many states including Rivers, Bayelsa, Lagos and Oyo states.

In north-central Kaduna, lines were long but impatient while waiting for materials to arrive almost three hours late.

He said the governor's decision followed reports of attacks on two communities in the state in the early hours of Saturday.

Traffic restrictions were in place across the country, which also closed its borders.

In Twitter posts, the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room said many polling stations are late in opening because of several problems including missing stamps, the late arrival of polling officials and faulty card readers.

A team of observers from the European Union Observation Monitoring Group and the Commonwealth group have said that a final report on the 2019 election process will be made available on Monday, February 25.

"I want to reassure you that elections will be held on Saturday", he said on Thursday.

Nigeria's top opposition challenger Atiku Abubakar has cast his ballot in a presidential election that observers say is too close to call.

"After all, it is not my brother that is contesting", said Patience Okoro in Agbor in the south. "I will congratulate myself".

The chief EUOM observer, Maria Arena, while speaking to journalists including reporter, Nnena Ibeh, at the Area 10/ post office, PU 018; registration area: 01, City Centre in Abuja, said the team is now collating information from all polling units across Nigeria.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, elections are expected to begin at 8 am.

Those who turned out on Saturday, however, dismissed concerns about having to wait. "Everybody is excited to be here".
