Boeing: 737 MAX certification followed U.S. rules

Initial safety reports said that the MCAS system would allow the tail to move 0.6 degrees at the most, which would allow a 5 degree nose-down movement of the plane.

Boeing Chairman, President and CEO Dennis Muilenburg issued the following statement regarding the report from Ethiopian Transport Minister Dagmawit Moges today.

Officials say 157 people from 35 different countries were killed when the Nairobi-bound plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa.

Boeing Co said on Sunday it was finalizing the development of a software upgrade and a revision of pilot training for its 737 MAX, the plane that has suffered two fatal crashes in the last five months.

An Ethiopian delegation has joined investigators in Paris tasked with uncovering the cause of the Boeing 737 Max crash on Sunday.

It added that all relevant data from the black boxes had so far been recovered and validated by the Ethiopian, American and European investigators. The crash of two of them in the space of just a few months, coupled with similarities in the circumstances, led countries and airlines around the world to ground the plane.

The updates are meant to address how the aircraft's flight control system - MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) - responds to erroneous sensor inputs, the planemaker said https://boeing.mediaroom.com/2019-03-17-Boeing-CEO-Muilenburg-Issues-Statement-on-Ethiopian-Airlines-Flight-302-Accident-Investigation in a statement.

The 737 Max 8 and 9 have been grounded worldwide since the Ethiopia crash.

Investigators are focusing on the automated anti-stalling system introduced on the 737 MAX 8, created to automatically point the nose of the aircraft downward if it is in danger of stalling.

The U.S. Congress is expected to hold hearings to investigate the details surrounding the crashes.

An Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed last weekend, killing 157 passengers and crew.

The FAA said it followed its standard certification process on the Max, while Boeing told the paper the regulatory agency had "considered the final configuration and operating parameters of MCAS during Max certification, and concluded that it met all certification and regulatory requirements". According to two sources who spoke to The New York Times, the evidence suggests that the jet's stabilizers were tilted upward, which would have then forced the nose of the plane downward.

Each time the MCAS is triggered, it can be overridden by a pilot.

Angle of attack sensors on the aircraft tell the MCAS to automatically point the nose of the plane down if it is in danger of going into a stall.
