Boeing 737 MAX pilots frantically searched manual as craft flew into water

Boeing 737 MAX certification probe

Following the crash, other countries grounded the 737 Max aircraft, including China, which has the most number of 737s. Among major U.S. air carriers (IYT), Boeing has received orders for 280 jets from Southwest Airlines (LUV) and 100 plane orders each from United Airlines (UAL) and American Airlines (AAL). The audit is separate from a criminal probe involving the Department of Justice. Regulators and safety experts are inspecting whether the Federal Aviation Administration thoroughly checked the automated system during the approval process.

Canada said Tuesday it will make its own assessment of Boeing's modifications to its 737 MAX airliners before allowing them to fly again in its airspace, after two crashes in less than five months.

Chicago-headquartered Boeing has promised a swift update of automatic flight software, but regulators in Europe and Canada want to be sure themselves, rather than rely on US vetting.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) called Chao's request "inadequate and incomplete".

MCAS is activated when angle of attack (AOA) sensors indicate that the airframe is in a dangerously high angle and attempts to correct it by pushing the plane nose down. He also questioned whether the FAA should have done more after the first 737 Max accident, and why the FAA didn't ground the plane as quickly as other regulators around the world.

The arrival of Dickson would come at a trying time for the FAA.

Dickson, who must be confirmed by the Senate, previously served as an airline captain and senior vice president for flight operations at Delta Air Lines.

U.S. media said the choice was made before the 737 MAX controversy arose as a result of recent crashes.

For the past 14 months, the agency has been under an acting administrator, Daniel Elwell, a former Air Force and American Airlines pilot.

"Based on facts from the Lion Air Flight 610 accident and emerging data as it becomes available from the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 accident, we're taking actions to fully ensure the safety of the 737 MAX", Muilenburg said in a letter addressed to airlines, passengers and the aviation community and released by Boeing on Monday.

According to a Bloomberg report, the extra pilot managed to diagnose the problem and disabled a malfunctioning flight-control system which averted disaster.

The March 10 Ethiopian Airlines crash has shaken the global aviation industry and cast a shadow over the flagship Boeing model meant to be a standard for decades to come, given parallels with the Lion Air calamity off Jakarta in October.

Investigators examining the Indonesian crash want to know how a computer ordered the plane to dive in response to data from a faulty sensor and whether pilots had enough training to respond appropriately to the emergency. The three sources discussed them on condition of anonymity.

In the hot seat over its certification of the MAX without demanding additional training and its closeness to Boeing, the FAA has said it is "absolutely" confident in its vetting. Because profits matter more than people. It is unclear when that inquiry began.
