Christchurch shootings: Attacker was 'lone gunman'

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern speaks to the media during a Post Cabinet media press conference

The Australian white supremacist accused of carrying out a massacre at two mosques in New Zealand briefly visited Israel in 2016, Israeli officials said Monday.

David Tipple, the managing director of Gun City, whose online store sold Tarrant four weapons, said he felt no responsibility for the killings.

He added: "The MSSA (military-style semi-automatic) reportedly used by the alleged gunman was not purchased from Gun City".

Authorities in New Zealand reported that 50 people were killed and at least 20 wounded at two mosques on Friday.

Mustafa Farouk, the President of Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand, said the community was in shock and mourning, but was resilient.

More than 17 minutes went live around the world before the link was shut down, but other videos of the alleged gunman driving between the Al Noor and Linwood mosques were uploaded to websites globally.

"All Gun City sales to this individual followed a police verified online mail order process".

The store "detected nothing extraordinary", about the buyer, he said.

New Zealand First is part of the ruling coalition along with Ardern's Labour Party.

At present, anyone over the age of 16 and considered to be "fit and proper to possess firearms" can get a general A-category licence in New Zealand.

An AR15 with a free-standing pistol grip, or a larger magazine, is deemed a MSSA and requires the more rigorously inspected "E-Cat" firearm licence.

Other firearm owners have also given up their weapons.

Tightening New Zealand's gun laws is at the top of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's agenda as she meets with her cabinet on Monday for the first time since the mass shooting in Christchurch that killed dozens of Muslim worshippers.

"However because we do not have a registry, we don't know how many there are or where they are".

There are an estimated 1.5 million firearms in New Zealand, which has a population of only 5 million, but it has had low levels of gun violence.

"I will not change my opinion about New Zealand".

She said her Cabinet had agreed in principle on the gun law reforms to be made, highlighting that the review had come within 72 hours of the attack.

Meanwhile, Australian counter-terrorism police searched two homes early Monday linked to Tarrant, police said.

YouTube is encouraging users to flag any videos showing this clip and said it's been removing thousands of videos related to the shooting in the last 24 hours.

"It did not include a location; it did not include specific details", she said.

She said: "While work is being done as to the chain of events that lead to both the holding of this gun license and the possession of these weapons, I can tell you one thing right now".

The burial process, which usually involves washing with three kinds of water, salving wounds and scrubbing skin, would be complicated, volunteers in Christchurch said.

"But some people have said because it was not a battlefield it is okay to wash the body".

Once identification is complete the names will be made public, Bush said.

The two mosques involved in the shootings have been closed since the massacre, but are expected to reopen by Friday prayers after cleansing blessings were carried out, said Haumaha.
