F1: Alonso to test with McLaren in Bahrain

Fernando Alonso to return to F1 with Mc Laren next week

Fernando Alonso will return to Formula One next week after being named as one of McLaren's drivers for the in-season test in Bahrain.

Alonso will drive on both days, on each occasion at the wheel of an MCL34 McLaren is running to aid Pirelli's tyre development.

That auto will be driven by Sainz and Lando Norris on Tuesday before Norris has the vehicle to himself on Wednesday.

It means McLaren only need to dedicate half a day of the post-Spanish Grand Prix test to a young driver, allowing Sainz and Norris to split the remaining time between them.

McLaren want Alonso's views on how much their vehicle has changed since a year ago, one of the worst in their history.

"I said past year "bye-bye" and it was because I felt this chapter was already complete - and I achieved in Formula One a lot more than I had dreamed".

I achieved a lot more in F1 than I dreamed of and I had great opportunities outside F1 to do something unprecedented.

Among those new challenges is a second attempt at winning the Indy 500 in May and the completion of his first season in the World Endurance Championship in June. Coming back is not in the plan.

Alonso said the Bahrain opportunity was his first real involvement with McLaren's F1 activities since his short-lived pre-season attendance.

"Honestly, I'm not missing too much at the moment as I've been very busy".

McLaren will run two cars at the test, with Alonso's dedicated to tyre testing, while a second is used for the team's own test programme.

"I guess they thought it is a good opportunity for me to try the auto but not take the driving time of the other drivers", Alonso added.

"But if something happens and a great opportunity arrives I probably will consider it - I don't close doors 100 per cent". Maybe if I was relaxing at home it would be different but I have been testing and preparing different things so, not much time to miss anything.
