"When there are allegations of information being leaked, an internal investigation has been opened and we are also looking at our vulnerabilities", a spokesperson for the Chicago PD said.

The reason for any possible interest in Smollett's charts or health records is because of his "hoax" case that rocked the nation recently.

The Chicago Police Department has launched an internal probe into Jussie Smollett's case after information was leaked during the course of the investigation.

When Smollett wrote the alleged check for $3500 days before the "attack", the memo line allegedly read, "5 weeks training nutrition plan".

"I will also add that there were several agencies briefed with information during that time and some of the information that went out was not factually accurate", Guglielmi told ABC News on Thursday evening.

The police department is looking into who was the culprit leaking information, which they state is "inaccurate", to the media. Police say Smollett orchestrated a fake hate crime attack with the help of two brothers in late January. She's appealing her dismissal and is speaking out because she fears others may have been overzealously fired over the same misunderstanding. According to sources, those employees were terminated after receiving access to the "Empire" actor's medical chart. The actor said the men yelled racial slurs at him and threatened his life while pouring an unknown substance on him.

The actor and singer is now out on $100,000 bond and is due back in court March 14 on a felony charge of disorderly conduct.

Chicago police called Smollett's allegedly staged attack a "publicity stunt", and expressed outrage that he had staged the attack because he was upset with his salary. The alleged attackers, brothers Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, were arrested and later released as they were said to be cooperating with police.

Smollett is next due in court on 14 March to face the disorderly conduct felony charge.

Smollett's representatives said they learned of the incident shortly after the news broke, but did not elaborate.
