New Zealand mosque shooting: Terror attack suspect Brenton Tarrant appears in court

Flowers left at cordon

Members of the Madinah Masjid mosque arrive for Jumu'ah prayer service on Danforth Ave. on Friday, March 15, 2019.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern vowed to change gun laws in response to the horrific Christchurch mosque shooting Friday, after the massacre left 49 dead and dozens injured.

Wearing a white prison suit, Tarrant appeared handcuffed and barefoot.

It was "reasonable to assume" Brenton Tarrant would face further murder charges, Judge Kellar said.

New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, said the gunman meant to continue his attack if he hadn't been stopped.

"While work is being done as to the chain of events that lead to both the holding of this gun licence and the possession of these weapons, I can tell you one thing right now; our gun laws will change", the New Zealand premier outlined.

"It's something that I think has shattered the sense of security of Muslims, certainly in New Zealand, and in Australia and nearby, as well around the world".

The Bangladesh team was on its way to the mosque, one of two sites of the shooting attack that killed at least 49 people.

Forty-one people were killed at the Al Noor mosque, seven at a mosque in the Linwood neighbourhood and one died in hospital, police said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford strongly condemned the horrifying attack, tweeting, "I join people across Ontario and Canada and stand with all legislators at Queen's Park in condemning this hatred and violence against our Muslim brothers and sisters".

"This attack has been an enormous shock for all New Zealanders, and I am aware that there is a real sense of fear and concern for personal safety, particularly among our Muslim communities", New Zealand police commissioner Mike Bush said.

New Zealand Attack: What We Know

New Zealand Police say they have asked all mosques across the country to "shut their doors".

The man said he knew some of those who were killed. All were acquired legally back in 2017, with a gun license, she said.

Hungry for any news, families and friends of the victims gathered at the city's Hagley College, near the hospital. Indeed, the writer claims to have had "brief contact" with Breivik, who he says gave his "blessing" to the Christchurch attack.

The shootings happened in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday. Two improvised explosive devices had been found in the vehicle and disabled.

He live-streamed footage of himself going room-to-room, victim to victim, shooting the wounded from close range as they struggled to crawl away in the main Christchurch mosque.

"It's been 36 hours, I haven't heard anything about them", he said.

Locals lay flowers in tribute to those killed and injured at Deans Avenue near the Al Noor Mosque. "It's not what we are about", Shamim Kassibawi, a publicist from New Zealand and UAE resident, told Arab News.

In Peel Region, consisting of cities west of Toronto such as Mississauga, Ont., and Brampton, Ont., Chief Chris McCord said specialized equity and community mobilization units would be making the rounds of mosques and other places of worship.

Two other armed suspects were taken into custody Friday while police tried to determine what role, if any, they played in the cold-blooded attack that stunned New Zealand, a country so peaceful that police officers rarely carry guns.

Five guns were used by the primary shooter in the attack, the Prime Minister said; two were semiautomatic guns, and two were shotguns.
