Prosecutor Who Dropped Charges Against Jussie Smollett Thinks Actor Is Guilty

Smollett's lawyers want focus put on brothers' role in 'attack'

After learning Tuesday that prosecutors had dropped charges against Smollett, a furious Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the $14,700 bond payment that Smollett agreed to forfeit did not begin to reimburse the city for the costs of the investigation, which began January 29.

Foxx told WLS she understands some believe Smollett got special treatment because of his celebrity status. Smollett said the incident ended with a noose placed around his neck and bleach poured on him, police said. He claimed they shouted, "This is MAGA country" - a reference to President Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan.

For his part, Smollett has always maintained his innocence.

"The police are assembling the cost [of the investigation]", Emanuel said.

The Chicago mayor says he wants to recoup close to $150,000 in funds that were spent on the Smollett case, after all charges against the "Empire" actor were dropped following 16 hours of community service and an agreement to forfeit his $10,000 bond. This has been an incredibly hard time, honestly one of the worst of my entire life. The move made it possible for Smollett's attorneys to get his criminal case immediately sealed and wiped clean.

But after Chicago police investigated, they alleged that Smollett had hired two men to stage the attack, though those charges were dropped by a prosecutor Tuesday.

The two brothers were initially drawn into the investigation after police released grainy images of two "persons of interest" in the area the night of the attack.

Foxx had recused herself from the case a week before charges were filed because of familiarity with a potential witness, a spokeswoman for her office said. They testified before a grand jury. Magats has said that he does not believe Smollett is innocent and Chicago police say he faked the attack.

"There were no conditions, and there was obviously no plea", Glandian said. During a press conference on Tuesday, Smollett insisted that he has been "truthful and consistent on every single level since day one". "So, it's not - it's not implausible", she told Guthrie. "No public official has the right to violate Mr. Smollett's due process rights".

"They were thinking, 'I'm going to help my friend".

"It's too early to think about what we would have to do if we didn't have Jussie", he said.

Jussie Smollett's attorney Tina Glandian claimed "whiteface" may have been used to disguise the identities of the Osundairo brothers. She said they discussed training and nutrition as Smollett was waiting on a delayed flight to Chicago. The contacts were cited by Foxx in recusing herself from the case on February 13, well before Smollett was charged.
