Trump supporter pleads guilty to sending bombs to Democrats

Broward County Sheriff's office shows Cesar Sayoc in Miami. Sayoc who is charged with sending pipe bombs to prominent critics of President Donald Trump is expected to plead guilty at a hearing

Cesar Sayoc who is an avid Trump supporter made headlines after mailing pipe bombs to some of the president's opponents such as President Barack Obama, and news outlets like CNN.

Cesar Sayoc wept as he entered the plea before a federal judge in NY.

The packages were addressed to two former presidents - Obama and Bill Clinton - along with sitting United States senators, the actor Robert De Niro and the billionaire activist George Soros, among others.

The bombs began turning up weeks before the hotly contested midterm elections, contributing to an already tense political environment.

He has been held without bail since his late-October arrest at a South Florida auto parts store. The pro-Trump stickers that covered the nearby van condemned liberals and the media; one contained an image of Clinton under red cross hairs.

"Thankfully no one was hurt by these risky devices, but his actions left an air of fear and divisiveness in their wake", Berman said.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Attorneys for five people facing federal terrorism-related charges following their arrests last summer in a New Mexico compound raid said Thursday their clients are being prosecuted because they are Muslims.

The van that Cesar Sayoc drove was festooned with stickers that hailed President Donald Trump and attacked his critics. Last week, though, court documents indicated that he planned to change his plea.

"I was aware of the risk they would explode", Sayoc said.

"What would prevent powder from fireworks from exploding?"

The hunt for the bomber began October 22 when a device was discovered in a mailbox at an estate in New York City's northern suburbs owned by the billionaire George Soros, a liberal political activist and frequent subject of conspiracy theories.

Authorities say the former stripper sent 14 mail bombs to former Secretary of State Clinton, De Niro and Soros, as well as to the CNN headquarters in NY.

Others targeted included California Sen.

Over several days, investigators tracked the packages to a mailing center in Florida. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker. His guilty plea does not guarantee a more lenient sentence - but Judge Jed Rakoff stressed he did not have to hand down a life sentence in September.

"Our democracy will simply not survive if our political discourse includes sending bombs to those we disagree with", said General John C. Demers, Assistant Attorney for the National Security Division, following the hearing.
