Video streaming subscriptions surpass cable customers for first time

The event “It’s show time” will be held at the Steve Jobs Theater at the Apple Park campus and will begin at 10am Pacific time

The company has vast content libraries in Hollywood.

Amazon Prime Video, along with a slew of home-grown OTT players like Hotstar, ALTBalaji, ZEE5, Voot, etc, are now enjoying a king's share in India's video-streaming market, but the tables could turn soon. However, there are reports of a few too many top news websites, such as NYT, are said to keep away from Apple's news service.

The move comes amid deepening woes for the news sector facing a hard transition to the digital world where few people want to pay for information and advertising is problematic.

However, the new service may not be available to the public until later this year, according to a report by Variety, which says, "sources familiar with the plans say Apple's video service will be targeted for a launch in summer or fall rather than the April timing that has been the subject of media speculation".

While players like Netflix and Hulu are unlikely to ever sign-on with Apple's service, the company does reportedly already have around 15 streaming providers on board for Monday's launch, which includes a collection of smaller digital-old services like Cheddar and Tastemade alongside the big players like Showtime and Starz. If Apple can simplify that process, it's going to have a winning strategy on its hands and will have created a streaming service worth paying for.

Subscription services for news and video have been in the works for some time.

"If I was an American broadcast network, I would have thought twice about giving all of my library to Netflix", Thompson said in response to questions about any talks with Apple to participate in the iPhone maker's new news service.

Apple is expected to roll out a streaming-video product at a press event on Monday - one that could come with a lineup of original programming from the likes of Oprah, Reese Witherspoon and Steven Spielberg.

It's also unclear whether Apple's bundles would include all of the same content as the individual streaming services themselves. The Apple video service will be tied to a TV app that is already pre-installed on Apple devices, putting the company's content at the fingertips of hundreds of millions of potential viewers.

Amazon may be less vulnerable to new competition because its revenue base comes from the broader base of services and not streaming. It might also reveal a revamped TV app. That service, previously dubbed "the Netflix of magazines, ' had bundled together magazines for one low monthly price".

After sorting through the rumors and speculation, from original content to what it will cost, this is everything we expect Apple to announce at their big event. Whether you're on a smart TV, a streaming dongle connected to a dumb TV, a computer, a tablet, or a smartphone, you can always access any and all of Netflix's massive catalog of streaming movies, TV shows, and specials.
