The letter comes days after NASA chief Bridenstine in a town hall meeting criticised India's anti-satellite missile (ASAT) test because of the debris is generated in the space and its potential threat to the International Space Station. NASA says that the massive amount of debris the weapons test created in orbit around the Earth now poses a threat to the ISS. "The objective was to avoid the threat of debris to any global space assets", Reddy said.

Reddy's comments come against the backdrop of criticism from the USA space agency - the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) - whose administrator Jim Bridenstine said that India's ASAT test had created about 400 pieces of debris of which 24 were in an orbit near the International Space Station.

Bridenstine and other space experts also said the risk from the Indian debris would dissipate as much of it would burn up as it entered the atmosphere.

Elaborating further about the A-Sat test conducted on March 27, he said, "The interceptor that has been used for this objective is a three stage vehicle with two stages of solid propellant and then a kill vehicle". "We don't need any more tests at this orbit now", though he did not rule out the option of conducting more tests in the future. "All necessary permissions were taken", he said.

He also responded to a question on Congress leader P Chidambaram's criticism of the government on the test, who had said that "only a foolish government" would reveal a defence secret. The idea began around 2014 and development started in 2016 with a go-ahead from the government. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstein talked about 60 bits have been tracked so far and from that 24 are going over the apogee of the ISS. However, India had already achieved the capability of shooting out moving targets in the space, way back in 2011 and has been testing long-range missiles for years. It also said that it will lead to creation of almost 400 pieces of orbital debris. Some 150 scientists worked round-the-clock and some 2,000 components were sourced from 50 private industries.

Deputy national security advisor Pankaj Saran clarified that the NASA is continuing its cooperation with India, including in proposed the manned mission to space.
