Fisher-Price’s Rock N Play Recalled After 30 Infant Deaths

Fisher-Price recalls sleepers after more than 30 babies died

That warning turned to a recall Friday of the roughly 4.7 million products sold since 2009, noting that more than 30 infant fatalities have occurred in Rock 'N Play sleepers.

Consumers should stop using the product immediately. But The American Academy of Pediatrics urged Fisher-Price and the CPSC to recall the sleepers, calling them "deadly".

They said the infants had rolled over while unrestrained or in other circumstances.

A separate Consumer Reports investigation linked the device to at least 32 infant deaths, including some for babies younger than the 3-month-old benchmark from Fisher-Price's original warning.

CPSC and Fisher-Price also reminded parents to "create a safe sleep environment" and never add blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, or other items to the Rock 'n Play.

In response, Fisher-Price has issued a voluntary recall of the product and is advising consumers to stop using the Rock 'n Play Sleeper immediately.

The recall did not say what caused the infants' deaths.

If you or someone you know has this product, you can visit Fisher-Price online at https://service.mattel.com and click on "Recalls & Safety Alerts" or phone 866-812-6518 from 9am to 6pm ET Monday through Friday for more information. "By not fully compensating consumers, Fisher-Price is assuring that many consumers will instead choose to keep the product", said Nancy Cowles, executive director of Kids in Danger, a nonprofit that focuses on reducing childhood injuries from consumer products. "There is convincing evidence that the Rock n" Play inclined sleeper puts infants' lives at risk, and CPSC must step up and take immediate action to remove it from stores and prevent further tragedies'.

Patty Davis, a spokeswoman with CPSC, had said the commission was aware of the report of additional fatalities and were looking into those deaths. The product was manufactured in China.
