Masters Notebook: Johnson's practice swing doesn't miss the ball

Zach Johnson

Former champion Zach Johnson has been involved in a freakish incident during the second round of the Masters, accidentally hitting his ball while taking a practice swing.

Johnson had another questionable hit earlier in the day, when his ball zoomed toward several terrified spectators.

Johnson had fun with the incident, giving people on the tee box permission to laugh because, as he said, "That's embarrassing".

The ball appeared to ricochet off the tee marker on the right, before coming to rest a couple of metres away.

After the initial shock the Englishman said Johnson saw the amusing side.

Under United States Golf Association rules, a ball isn't considered to be "in play" until it's actually hit from the tee area.

Ultimately, Johnson did not need to take a penalty stroke because he had not meant to hit the ball and it was not yet in play.

The good news for Johnson: He hit his actual drive 285 yards down the middle of the fairway, knocked his second shot to 30 feet and two-putted for birdie on the 510-yard, par-5 hole. "Maybe I've tried to do it, but I don't think I could do it again even if I tried".

The 2007 Masters champ let out an "oh, s-t" after contact and turned to playing partners, Matt Kuchar and Ian Poulter, to find out what the protocol was.

Johnson went on to just about make the cut, ending the second round on 1-over-par.

"Okay, there's a first for everything there boys", Johnson said, relieved.
