Merkel to host May for Brexit talks on Tuesday

French President Emmanuel Macron is leading the charge to impose tough political conditions on the UK as the price for any Brexit delay

MPs and peers backed the bill on Monday night meaning there is now a legal requirement on Theresa May to seek an extension to Article 50 to prevent a no-deal Brexit. The continued uncertainty would also be bad for our businesses and citizens.

Seibert would not further comment on the German government's position regarding May's Friday proposal to delay Brexit until June 30 to avoid crashing out without a deal at the end of this week.

So far, MPs have rejected the withdrawal agreement Theresa May reached with other European leaders previous year.

The bill received its Royal Assent from the Queen on Monday night, and Commons Leader Andrea Leadsom told MPs that this meant there will be a government motion on Tuesday asking the House to approve the PM's request to the European Union to delay Brexit until 30 June.

"For Theresa May to open talks with someone like Jeremy Corbyn is not at all easy but she is doing that because she is totally and utterly determined to deliver Brexit", Hunt said before a meeting of European Union foreign affairs ministers.

On the eve of an European Union summit of national leaders due to decide whether to grant Britain another Brexit delay, Barnier stressed that the length of any second postponement beyond the current date of April 12 would depend on the rationale presented by Prime Minister Theresa May.

The MPs met Mrs May in Downing Street on Monday and it is understood they were more open to the idea of a customs arrangement, which would allow the United Kingdom to do its own trade deals.

Mrs May has enraged Conservative Eurosceptics by reaching out to the opposition leader in her search to identify a Brexit formula that can win a Commons majority.

As a last resort, May has even started cross-party talks with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, but there have been no results so far.

The PM also updated Merkel on the ongoing discussions with the opposition Labour party.

They also discussed upcoming European parliamentary elections with the PM saying that the government was working very hard to avoid the need for the United Kingdom to take part.

He acknowledged, however, that there were likely to be further attempts to put down amendments requiring a confirmatory public vote when any agreement was put to Parliament for ratification.

The Cabinet Office said it was taking responsible steps, but the move did not make participation in the elections inevitable.

And later the pair had a frosty exchange on a balcony overlooking Berlin's Tiergarten, although the German Chancellor was smiling when she waved off the Prime Minister as she heads off to Paris to meet Emmanuel Macron.
