Shake-up at Homeland Security speeds beyond Nielsen's exit

JABIN BOTSFORD WASHINGTON POST File Kirstjen Nielsen

Trump announced Nielsen's resignation on Sunday.

At the same time, reports that the Trump team is reportedly eyeing a successor with an even more hard-line approach to immigration triggered alarm.

Nielsen has not been the only casualty of the administration's new strategy.

Although Sunday's resignation letter doesn't say exactly why she chose to resign, it does mention the national "discourse" regarding America's borders. The people say she has always been frustrated by the difficulty getting other departments to help with the growing number of families coming crossing the border.

Two AP sources said Nielsen went to the White House to speak with Trump following their trip to the border late last week. But she expressed some frustration with the current immigration system. "I'm forever grateful and proud of the men and women of DHS who work so hard every day to execute their missions and protect the homeland", she continued.

But Nielsen's ouster serves as a reminder that Miller functions as a shadow chief of staff in the Trump administration, and is instrumental in keeping Trump focused on Miller's own obsession with what can only be called a politics of white nationalism.

"I will under no circumstances support a nominee who does not forcefully denounce this administration's policy of separating families at the border", Harris said.

According to the Post, Trump applauded Nielsen over the incident-which was the sort of "tough" action the president wanted from his homeland security secretary. She had expected to be pushed out last November, but her exit never materialized.

But in recent weeks, as a new wave of migration has taxed resources along the border and as Trump sought to regain control of the issue for his 2020 re-election campaign, tensions flared anew.

Recently, the President has spoken several times about the idea of shutting down the southern border entirely. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said Nielsen's 16-month tenure was a "disaster from the start".

Nielsen became the face of the Trump administration's hardline immigration policies, including the "zero tolerance" policy that lead to hundreds of family separations at the southern border. She added: "The Trump Administration's increasingly toxic anti-immigrant policies were resoundingly rejected by the American people in the midterm election". Nielsen tried to explain to the President that the asylum laws allow migrants from Central America to come to the United States and gain entry.

He insists that the arrival of immigrants across the southern USA border constitutes a national emergency.
