World's largest plane takes off for the first time

Stratolaunch pops a wheelie during January's high-speed taxi test

"We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today's flight crew, our partners at Northrup Grumman's Scaled Composites and the Mojave Air and Space Port". It hit a top speed of 304 kilometers per hour and reached an altitude of 17,000 feet, reported AFP.

Stratolaunch Systems Corp. chief executive Jean Floyd said on April 13, the aircraft made a "spectacular" landing that was on the mark.

Built by Stratolaunch Systems Corporation, the company founded by Paul G Allen, late Microsoft co-founder, Stratolaunch has a dual fuselage design. But the change in plans came soon after the death reports of Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen, who started Stratolaunch in 2011.

The aircraft is created to release rockets attached to the centre of its enormous wing, which stretches 385 feet from tip to tip.

The aircraft has a wingspan of 385 ft (117 m) and a length of 238 ft (73 m).

It is created to carry into space, and drop, a rocket that would in turn ignite to deploy satellites.

To complete this task, the aircraft is equipped with six engines, two fuselages instead of one, and a wing longer than a United States football field, which makes it the largest plane ever built in terms of wingspan.

The Stratolaunch is the furthest into the development of future rocket bearing aircraft, but it isn't alone. It would be cheaper than rockets fired from the ground.

In August, Stratolaunch said it was developing a "family of launch vehicles" that could be deployed from the plane to carry satellites.

The jet is powered by the same type of engines used by Boeing 747s and is created to take off at a maximum weight 589,676 kilograms.

The previous wingspan leader was Hughes' second world war-era eight-engine H4 Hercules flying boat, which was nicknamed the Spruce Goose.

"The aircraft is a remarkable engineering achievement and we congratulate everyone involved". Surviving in an aviation museum, it has an approximately 320-foot (97.5-meter) wingspan but is just under 219 feet (67 meters) long.

Stratolaunch portrays its vessel as the "world's biggest plane" however there are air crafts which are longer from nose to tail.

The dual-fuselage Stratolaunch, which has six Boeing 747 engines, is created to launch rockets into orbit from an altitude of 35,000 feet.
