Sparked by her mother's plan to separate her from her beloved nanny, young Gloria's paternal aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who founded New York's Whitney Museum, successfully sued for custody of "the poor little rich girl". She married for the first time at 17, causing her aunt to disinherit her. "But she was ready - she was ready to go".

Their elder son, Carter, a Princeton graduate and editor at American Heritage, took his own life aged 23 at his mother's NY home, an event she witnessed. In 1978 she sold her Gloria Vanderbilt brand and started another fashion company.

Vanderbilt was born into wealth on February 20, 1924, in New York City.

My mom grew up in France, not knowing anything about the Vanderbilt family or the money that she would inherit when she turned 21.

The philanthropist who, for many Americans, may be best remembered for her slim blue jeans and household good lines, reportedly died of cancer. "When they made the documentary on her, she had the producers contact Wheeler for pictures of 216 Hope - the main building - and of Wheeler Hall, where the arts [were]", said Flynn.

"Every time I kissed her goodbye, I'd say, "I love you, Mom", he said.

"Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms", Mr Cooper said in a statement.

She published a history of her love life, "It Seemed Important at the Time: A Romance Memoir", in 2004, and published an erotic novel, "Obsession", in 2009.

Vanderbilt found another avenue for her creativity in the years that followed. Her father, financier Reginald Vanderbilt, the heir to a railroad fortune, died when she was a baby.

The socialite and fashion designer died Monday at age 95. "I don't think age has anything to do with what you write about", she told The New York Times. She had two sons with Stokowski: Leopold Stokowski was born in 1950, and Christopher Stokowski in 1952. She was also the author of several books. She wrote numerous memoirs and novels.

"Her mother had married the wrong Vanderbilt - an affable drunkard and spendthrift", who died when Vanderbilt was 15 months old, according to the NY article. "She was the strongest person I'd ever met but she wasn't tough".

"She would have graduated with the class of '42 - but she left at 17 to get married", said Laurie Flynn, Director of Strategic Communication at Wheeler, in a phone interview with GoLocalProv.com on Monday. You know how children can be about their parents.

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, attend the premiere of "Nothing Left Unsaid" on April 4, 2016, at the Time Warner Center in NY. I did know that.

"There was a moment when I thought I was going to jump after him but then I thought of you ... and it stopped me from doing that", she told Anderson. Actresses Alyssa Milano called her "an incredible woman" and Dana Delany said she treasures one of Vanderbilt's paintings, while model Carol Alt hailed her as a "fashion icon and innovator".
