It is believed the submarine was a AS-12 research vessel - also known as Losharik - according to reports in Russian Federation.

Russian navy ships and a submarine take part in a naval parade at the port of Severomorsk, Russia, July 31, 2016. According to official statement, fire was extinguished or put under control.

However the Novaya Gazeta newspaper cited sources as saying that the accident took place on an AS-12 nuclear mini-submarine, which is capable of going to extreme depths.

"Losharik is among the most mysterious of the closely guarded fleet".

"The Supreme Commander-in-Chief has all the information, but this data can not be made public, because this refers to the category of absolutely classified data", Peskov said, according to the state-run Tass Russian News Agency. Unarmed and nuclear-powered, Russian state media reports have suggested it can dive as deep as 10,000 feet.

The data cables, together believed to be about 10 lakh kilometres in length, carry nearly the entire daily traffic of phone calls, SMSs, emails, and digital transactions of the entire world.

The longest submarine in the world, the Belgorod is designed as the country's first operational launch platform for the Poseidon nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed long-range torpedo.

The Ministry of Defense didn't report the incident until the day after it happened. Other online "reports" claimed these events also coincided with a meeting of the European Union Security Council, a body that does not exist. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said it is normal that details of the accident can not be made public, "There is some information that belongs in the category of state secrets". The NRPA had not noticed an increase in radiation levels in the area, he said. Such operations have aroused suspicions from the USA, whose Navy has for decades competed with Russia's Northern Fleet for dominance in the Arctic region.

Putin's decree published Friday posthumously awarded four naval officers with the Hero of Russian Federation medals and the others with the Order of Courage. Russia's defense ministry denied it had communicated anything to the Norwegians.

"There has not been any formal communication from Russian Federation to us about this", Per Strand, a director at the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, told Reuters news agency when asked if it had been informed that the submarine was nuclear-powered.

Mr. Trump's crew said Russia's deployment of the Novator land-based cruise missile broke the treaty, with the POTUS saying Russian Federation had been "violating for a few years".

Seven "captains 1st class" (Russian equivalent to NATO OF-5/US O-6 captain rank), perished in the blaze, namely Konstantin Ivanov, Andrey Voskresenskiy, Konstantin Somov, Denis Oparin, and Vladimir Abankin, as well as two honored "Heroes of Russia" - Denis Dolonskiy and Nikolay Filin.

After traveling there, Shoigu spoke with representatives of the Northern Fleet and revealed a few more critical details, such as there being a survivor, reportedly a civilian representative of the defense industry.

The blaze erupted in the vessel's battery compartment and spread, Shoigu said in televised remarks.

The bodies of the 14 dead were brought to St Petersburg for burial at the city's Serafim cemetery. "Russian submarine safety has been bad since the Soviet period".

The submariners on board were unique military specialists and highly skilled professionals who conducted an important survey of the Barents Sea floor, Shoigu said Wednesday at a meeting with members of an investigative commission in Severomorsk.

Russian Federation has not given details about the submarine's mission. In the Barents Sea the vessel would have been studying the relief of the seabed for the navy to update its charts, military expert Viktor Baranets told the defence ministry channel TV Zvezda. Shoigu said it had been a planned "scientific-research" mission and was in Russian territorial waters when the fire started. The sub sank and killed all 118 sailors on board. According to the Drive, "the weapon is meant to give Russian Federation a second-strike deterrent capability that is entirely immune to USA missile defenses".
