In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, he said he understands why they are skeptical about the controversial extradition bill. that the protesters are fighting to completely scrap.

University professor Sealing Cheng asked who was responsible for the destruction of the legislature, implying that an arrogant government had driven the protesters to break into the building and rampage through it. Referring to Hunt's intervention earlier in the week, foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Hunt: "seems to be fantasising in the faded glory of British colonialism and in the bad habit of gesticulating while looking down on other countries' affairs", before adding: "I need to re-emphasize that Hong Kong has now returned to its motherland".

They say any meeting should be public and include a wider representation.

They expressed hope that youngsters would control their emotions but also urged the government to stop being "arrogant" and listen to their demands.

Hong Kong's No 2 official, Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung, said Friday night that the government wants to start a honest dialogue with students, following a meeting with opposition lawmakers.

Angeline Chan of Hong Kong Progressive Lawyers Group (PLG), one of the protesting groups, told Anadolu Agency by phone from Hong Kong: "The students rejected the closed-door meeting offer made by Lam last evening".

"We must advise and stop [children] in situations where lives are at risk", it said.

Lam, who was appointed as Hong Kong's leader by a committee dominated by pro-Beijing elites, suspended the legislation after more than a million Hong Kongers marched against it on June 9 and then a June 12 protest blocked access to the legislature and nearby streets.

The protesters remain unsatisfied.

"They are sacrificing themselves for Hong Kong, for the freedom Hong Kong people deserve", she said.

Three major peaceful protests have been held, but protesters have also besieged the police headquarters on June 21 and stormed the parliament.

Dozens of protesters were arrested after the protests and an independent investigation into a police crackdown on June 12 protest that included tear gas and rubber bullets. The Legislative Council has suspended meetings until October for repairs to the heavily damaged complex.

A Hong Kong street artist has been sentenced for a crime.

Pun accused police of mistreating him while in custody, according to the media reports.

The judge said the court could not investigate the claims and directed him to the police complaints procedure.
