President Trump touts military participation in revamped Fourth of July celebration

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton forcefully pushed back on plans by President Donald Trump to include U.S. Army tanks in the Fourth of July celebration on the National Mall, saying that "can't happen". An Associated Press photographer saw two M1A1 Abrams tanks and two Bradley Fighting Vehicles at a railyard on the edge of Washington on Monday, transported up from Fort Stewart, Georgia, for the event, a USA official told AP.

The Council of the District of Columbia opposes the exhibition, tweeting Monday, "Tanks but no tanks", and linking to a 2018 memo from the Pentagon that discouraged them during planning for the scuttled Veterans Day parade because "consideration must be given to minimize damage to local infrastructure".

While it remains unclear whether Pentagon officials are actually as excited about Trump's July 4th event as the President insists they are, it seems as though military leaders could be very visible as the service chiefs have been asked to stand with Trump during the celebrations, according to a different defense official.

Discussing his Independence Day celebration, which will already include plane flyovers, a parade and a possible speech from the president himself, Mr. Trump discussed the tanks that will be included in the celebration.

Trump's address is set to take place at the Lincoln Memorial.

The military display is all part of the "Salute to America" event that Trump is putting on this Thursday.

"We're going to have a great Fourth of July in Washington, D.C. It'll be like no other", Trump countered.

Local officials also had objected because of the damage the heavy armored tanks could do to city streets.

There will also be a military flyover by the Navy's Blue Angels, and one of the jets used as Air Force One. An official said only that "VIPs, friends and family, and members of the military" are getting access to the cordoned-off area.

A progressive group received permission Monday for their round, diapered Donald Trump baby balloon to be present during a July 4 celebration near the location where Trump will deliver remarks celebrating the nation's birthday. Pentagon officials referred back to the White House. A plant in Lima, Ohio, is refurbishing Abrams tanks.

Sherman tanks were the tank most widely used by the USA during World War II, but they have been out of service for decades.

"The Secret Service is concerned with the safety of the event, (and) the White House is dealing with the issuance of tickets", Miller said. "So we have to put them in certain areas, but we have the brand new Sherman tanks and we have the brand new Abrams tanks".

But Trump's presidential campaign did, a source close to the organization said.

The tanks, which weigh about 60 tons apiece, were reportedly transported from Fort Stewart in the USA state of Georgia.

The world renowned Blue Angels aerial demonstration team of the U.S. Air Force, which flies versions of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 strike fighter, will show-off their precision flying skills.

The Republican National Committee is distributing a "small number" of tickets to the event, which it says is standard practice and follows what the Democratic National Committee did under Democratic presidents.

Democrats in Congress have accused Trump of hijacking the event to boost his re-election prospects in 2020.
